The Qube Effect
A five-year artist-development program with Brisbane City Council that turned the city’s electrical utility boxes into a canvas — and a paid first commission — for emerging street artists.
The brief
Council wanted more than beautification: a genuine pathway that develops emerging street artists while activating overlooked civic infrastructure across Brisbane’s suburbs.
Approach
We designed and ran the program end to end — an annual open call, paid commissions for 24 emerging artists a year, mentoring, and the logistics of painting utility boxes (“QUBEs”) across Greater Brisbane.
Outcome
Over five years the QUBE Effect activated 100+ utility boxes across 6+ suburbs and gave scores of emerging artists their first paid public commission — many going on to BSAF and larger work.
