QUBE
Effect
An artist development program in partnership with Brisbane City Council, activating electrical infrastructure across the city with emerging street art talent.
Turning infrastructure into art.
The QUBE Effect was an artist development program delivered by Vast Yonder in partnership with Brisbane City Council. The program engaged 24 emerging street artists annually to transform electrical utility boxes (QUBEs) across Greater Brisbane into miniature public artworks.
More than just a beautification initiative, the QUBE Effect was designed as a genuine pathway for emerging artists — providing paid commissions, mentoring, public exhibition opportunities and professional development in a real-world public art context.
Developing the next generation of street artists.
Each year, a new cohort of artists was selected through an open call process. Selected artists received professional mentoring from established street art practitioners, training in surface preparation and outdoor materials, and the opportunity to deliver a permanent commissioned public artwork.
The program specifically targeted emerging and early-career artists who had not yet had the opportunity to work on large-scale public art commissions, providing a structured entry point into the professional public art sector.
Works were installed across suburbs including Fortitude Valley, West End, Paddington, New Farm, Woolloongabba and beyond — adding colour and character to everyday streetscapes while giving artists a visible, permanent portfolio piece in the public realm.
