IPSWICH PUBLIC ART PROGRAM
In 2020, the walls of Ipswich were the canvas for a vibrant and artistic transformation that echoed through the city streets, thanks to the our public art activation, which took place as a sub-program in the Brisbane Street Art Festival. This event, which brought colour, life, and culture to the heart of the community, celebrated artistic expression in its most dynamic and diverse forms.
Among the highlights of Ipswich Public Art, talented artists such as Fintan Magee, Gus Eagleton, Emily Devers, Jordache, and Rachael Sarra left their unique mark on large walls around the city, filling them with images that inspired, provoked reflection, and told captivating stories.
In addition to the significant murals, the festival offered a series of interactive workshops, allowing participants to dive into the world of urban art. From an introduction to aerosol usage to stencil techniques and brushwork in still life, the workshops provided a unique opportunity for aspiring artists to explore and develop their skills under the guidance of talented professionals.
The festival concluded with “The Switch Up Street Party,” a lively celebration that brought together art, music, and community in an unforgettable experience. The event included panel discussions with prominent artists, live Scribble Slam battles that challenged artists to create works in real-time, all while participants enjoyed a selection of delicious food and refreshing drinks to the sounds of local DJs and bands.
Our Ipswich Public Art program not only transformed the city’s urban landscapes but also created a space for gathering and celebration for local residents and visitors alike. By providing access to street art, the festival inspired a renewed appreciation for the creativity and transformative power of artistic expression.
As the colorful murals continue to tell stories on the walls of Ipswich and memories of the festival resonate throughout the community, this program remains a testament to the lasting impact art can have on our lives and our cities. May this once off celebration of culture and creativity continue to illuminate and enrich the city of Ipswich for many years to come.
